Construction Technology

Tim Richardson, Instructor

Building Trades is offered as a two-year occupational skills program at Newton Career Center.  The class is offered as a two-period block, and students earn 2 Carnegie units each year.

The instructor is Coach Sam Evans who comes to Newton Career Center as a State Licensed Instructor in Social Sciences in both high school and middle school as well as Construction Technology. Coach Evans brings over twenty-five years experience in all phases of construction and is Nationally Certified by The National Center for Construction Education and Research to teach Core Curriculum, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Masonry, Heating Air-Conditioning and Ventilation from the Contren Learning Series.

The Building Trades program is a comprehensive program of instruction and hands-on experiences designed to help students develop knowledge, skills and experience needed to secure entry-level employment in carpentry, brick masonry, construction framing, electrical wiring, and related areas in the building industry. Each student will have a wallet card and will be registered nationally in the NCCER data base upon completion of each module. This registration is permanent, and anytime a student applies for a construction job, the company can pull up his or her credentials on any computer using the wallet card ID number.

This is a nationally recognized curriculum, and any student who takes advantage of this course will definitely benefit from this course in the future. Most commercial construction companies either teach or require modules from the Contren Learning Series for all employees.
