From the Principal 's Desk
Newton Elementary School located in Newton, MS, is composed of grades K-4 with an enrollment of 467 students. The staff make-up consists of a principal, instructional facilitator, secretary, records clerk, nurse, counselor, librarian, two speech therapists, and a computer lab assistant. There are also twenty eight certified teachers and fourteen assistant teachers.
Our curriculum consists of math, reading, language arts, social studies, and science. We offer our students weekly instruction in music, character education, library and physical education. Kindergarten and first grade have incorporated Saxon Phonics and Saxon Math into their curriculum. Shurley English, a researched based language program, has been implemented throughout the elementary school.
A minimum of three multimedia computers in each classroom are connected to the internet through fiber optic wiring. Academic software programs which are utilized by each include, but are not limited to, the Accelerated Reading Program and the A+ Learning System for reading and math. The elementary school recently purchased twenty five wireless laptop computers that can be used in any classroom on our campus.
Newton Elementary students participate in a fall and spring Scholastic Book Fair, a Local and Regional Science Fair, a Local and Regional Reading Fair, and various East Central Talented and Gifted Regional competitions.
We believe that parental involvement is the key to our student success. We provide activities to involve our parents throughout the year. Some of these are a school wide Read-In Day, various field trips, mentor programs, and an active PTO.
The Mississippi National Guard is our adopted organization.
